Laura’s Light is proving dangerous when left alone on the lead.
At Del Mar on Nov. 30, Laura’s Light led by at least a length to the final turn before she was caught by Alms in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at a mile on turf, finishing a good second.
In the December 29 $83,604 Blue Norther Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, no one could catch Laura’s Light. Ridden by Abel Cedillo, Laura’s Light set her own pace and prevailed by 3 1/4 lengths over 9-2 Croughavouke, finishing a mile on turf in 1:35.18.
“My idea was to break and go,” Cedillo said. “They let me take an easy lead.”
The Peter Miller-trained Laura’s Light ($7) was a lukewarm favorite in the field of nine. She was offered by Hidden Brook Farm at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling auction.
Cedillo rode Laura’s Light for the first time in the Durante. He was impressed by the filly’s stretch run on Sunday.
“Last time, she got a little tired, but not today,” he said.
Laura’s Light set a modest pace of 23.73 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.54 for a half-mile in the Blue Norther, the final stakes of 2019 at Santa Anita.
Laura’s Light, by Constitution, has won 2 of 3 starts and earned $87,320. She races for Gary Barber, who acquired her after a maiden race.
