D J Stable’s Colby The Latest Stakes Winner Out of Hidden Brook Florida

Sunday, September 22, 2019

At the top of the short Charles Town homestretch, four 2-year-old fillies had any sort of chance to win the $100,000 Dickie Moore Stakes. Colby would’ve easily been the longest price among them at that moment.

Colby had led early, pressed the pace in the middle of the Dickie Moore, and past the quarter-pole, as Dixie Heart and Majestic Edge broke into the clear, looked like she was done. Yet no sooner had Colby slumped nearly out of contention that she sparked suddenly to life, finding her best stride under Jose Ortiz through the final furlong to get up and win the Dickie Moore by three-quarters of a length.

Majestic Edge, who set the pace at odds of 15-1, hung stubbornly around but was edged by a nose for second by Gifted Heart. Stickingtogether, the 7-5 favorite, finished fourth without ever reaching contention.

Colby ($7.60) was coming off a second-start Monmouth maiden win for the D J Stable and trainer John Servis, and she coped better Saturday night with the Moore’s two-turn, seven-furlong trip than the pair she ran down late.

The filly is among the 36 winners and 11 blackytpe horses in 2019 who’ve graduated from the Hidden Brook Florida training center near Ocala.

Colby, a $440,000 auction buy, is by Super Saver and out of Macha, by Majestic Warrior. She was timed in 1:27.52 over a track surface upgraded from sloppy to muddy for the Dickie Moore.
